A CHRISTMAS HORROR STORY: Innovating the Horror Anthology Trend

Since we're heading close to Christmas, and I'm a major horror freak, it's a must to get into the unholy spirit of the season and explore something of a trend in two different ways: the horror anthology (which is a collection of horror shorts intending to scare the living crap out of you in short bursts) -- and, disturbing Christmas stories! Pass the hot chocolaaaaaate.... Mmmmm....

And How're We Going to Explore That? I Just Happened to Catch an Interesting Film on Netflix Called.... A CHRISTMAS HORROR STORY

How in Krampus's name did I not catch such a Christmas gem as this? Campy. Fun. Reminiscing of the nostalgic joy that is Tales From the Crypt and how unabashedly cheeky the stories are. Except we can dress up the crypt keeper in red and white and call him Santa! Or William Shatner, even.

Aside from that, though, this article's about so much more, in that the film took a different format of the horror anthology, breaking up four different stories and alternating between all of them. Rather than go the linear format and play each story from start to finish, one after the other, A CHRISTMAS HORROR STORY really is just one 'story' with four different plots.

I approve. Ingenious. A gambit, maybe, and not every theme can pull this off, or else the flow gets a big muddy. But, overall, given all four plots are about one theme -- Christmas -- it actually works quite nicely.

I'm Loving This Trend Just in Case You Haven't Figured Out

Horror movie shorts. Anthologies (like V/H/S/2 and the ABCs of Death). But to make it even better, this is about some of the darker imaginations of the yuletide spirit, where we get in touch with everything that haunts the soul and gives us all the more reason to rise up and give thanks. We saw it with such stories like A CHRISTMAS CAROL, THE POLAR EXPRESS (at least the film adaptation), classics like BLACK CHRISTMAS and SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT, and, yes that little film released recently called KRAMPUS.

We can now add this horned beast of cinematic lumps of coal into our stocking and relish in the frigid air of winter. 'Tis the season to be scary, indeed.

Potentially very good. See below. It turns out that the announcement is official according to the Carrie Bradshaw of the Sanderson bunch (Sarah Jessica Parker): there will be a "Hocus Pocus" sequel, premiering on Disney+.
