While it can be a cesspool of negativity and cruelty if you’re not careful, social media is also a pretty wonderful place that offers us, for starters, unprecedented access to the filmmakers, writers and artists who have created the things we love the most. Where else but on Twitter, I ask, can you get some really great advice from Tom Savini during a quarantine?
Taking to Twitter last night, Savini shared a wonderful and inspiring video message to the students of his special makeup effects program at the Douglas Education Center, which is unfortunately on hold for obvious reasons. But the message isn’t just for his students but for all artists. The gist? Use this time at home, if you have the means and the time, to create.
“Give life to something that didn’t exist before,” Savini eloquently encourages in a video filmed in his workshop. “If you’re an artist,” he adds, “now is the time to flourish.”
Sometimes creation offers the best escape, and the beauty is that you don’t have to leave the house to create. Write that story. Paint that painting. Make that movie. If not now, when?
