As a horror fan who also grew up reading comics, it’s been excruciating waiting for the release of The New Mutants, the adaptation of the popular Marvel comic book that was directed by Josh Boone a few years back.
After a handful of delays, the horror-tinged X-Men spinoff was finally slated to hit theaters this past April, at least before the pandemic forced the newly-renamed 20th Century Studios to delay it indefinitely.
The immediate outcry was for Disney to just rip the bandaid off and release the film on specialty VOD alongside either of their Hulu or Disney+ services. Last week, Amazon sent fans into a frenzy when they listed a preorder link, which was picked up by several major outlets and reported as “official”.
While Bloody Disgusting awaited confirmation, the link was removed, leaving the release in question once again. Was this a mistake that revealed Disney’s plans or was it an accident completely?
“The PVOD preorder listing was apparently a mistake, with Amazon’s system automatically including it based on the film’s previous April release date pre-pandemic shutdown,” explained THR in their Heat Vision newsletter.
According to their sources, “the long-delayed X-Men film is still planned for a theatrical release.”
It’s awesome to know Disney/20th Century Studios has this much confidence in their horror-themed comic book film, but the wait is getting borderline ridiculous. Let’s just hope that the product ends up being worth the wait. Give us Demon Bear!
