It’s no secret that Dino Crisis fans have been waiting an eternity for Capcom to finally return to the series in some fashion. And while there are fan projects underway that are looking to fill that void, it’s easy to forget that Capcom did bring Dino Crisis to the PC back in 2000.
Which means fans can patch up the old game to give it something of a remaster.
Which is exactly what the folks over at The Apple of Eden have been doing with Dino Crisis Classic REbirth. The game has just received a new update, which adds a bevy of features and improvements, the first and foremost being making the two-decade old game able to run on modern hardware.
Things like higher resolutions (including widescreen), higher frames per second, additions that fix the infamous PSX wobbly textures, higher sound quality, DirectX9 support, new input detection for keyboard and controller support, and more.
But as with most of these cool things, there’s a caveat: To get this all to work, you’ll need a legit copy of the Japanese version of Dino Crisis by SourceNext. You can also use the MediaKite version, but there’s an extra step involved.
Dino Crisis Classic REbirth also isn’t perfect. If you use the widescreen modes, there will be spots where geo is missing (since the game wasn’t built to fill a 16×9 screen), and there are some animation hiccups when running the game using higher framerates.
However, if you know where to look, and are able to get this all working, you’ll be able to revisit a classic of the Panic Horror genre that still holds up 20 years later.
Props to PCGamer for this.
