David Koepp Reveals Modern Day Inspiration for ‘Bride of Frankenstein’

Appearing on this week’s episode of The Boo Crew podcast to talk about You Should Have Left, starring Kevin Bacon, writer-director David Koepp (Jurassic ParkPanic Room, Stir of Echoes) gave us a little more insight into the resurrection of Bride of Frankenstein, which was initially going to be part of Universal’s “Dark Universe,” with Bill Condon attached to direct.

Speaking with The Boo Crew, Koepp reveals that the modern day inspiration behind his fresh take on Bride of Frankenstein comes from Silicon Valley:

“I just gave Universal a new draft about a month ago and they seem to really like it and they’re talking to directors,” he tells us. “It’s become the story of how are we extending our lives; can we create life, can we cheat death? It only gets more and more relevant over time. The big life extension work right now that’s being out in Silicon Valley is overwhelming, impressive and scary, and I feel like a present day version of that is begging to be made.”

As for the 85-year-long commentary behind the Bride, Koepp says it’s more relevant than ever.

“The other thing is she is a woman who is not created but resurrected, and certain people feel ownership over her, and that almost too relevant today in the era of #metoo,” he explained. “What are her rights as a person, the person that exists, if you were dead? There are a lot of really interesting questions that are raised.

“Again, it’s horror effortlessly lending itself to metaphor,” he asserts.

James Whale directed the 1935 sequel to Frankenstein in which Dr. Frankenstein builds his monster a mate.

With the recent success of The Invisible Man, it feels like the rebirth of the Bride of Frankenstein is imminent.
