Drive-In Box Office: ‘The Wretched’ Hits $1 Million and ‘Becky’ Debuts With Nearly $200,000

IFC Midnight’s creature feature The Wretched has been at the top of the drive-in box office charts for a month, but it’s finally got some competition now that Becky is part of the picture.

Quiver Distribution’s Kevin James and Lulu Wilson-starring home invasion film debuted at 42 drive-in locations this weekend and pulled in $178,186, Variety is reporting today.

The Wretched, meanwhile, made another $162,000 at 95 total drive-in locations over the weekend, carrying the horror movie to an impressive $1 million milestone at the box office.

Variety notes that “a total of 554 of the nation’s 5,400 movie locations are open, including 243 drive-ins,” with IFC and Quiver currently the only distributors actually reporting their box office numbers on a weekly basis. As Deadline clarifies, movies like Trolls World Tour and The Invisible Man had been out-grossing The Wretched throughout May, contrary to what we had believed to be the case; because the numbers for those films weren’t being reported, it appeared that drive-in releases were topping the charts when that wasn’t quite the full picture.

Regardless, both The Wretched and Becky have proven to be successful on the reinvigorated drive-in scene, and Becky has now overtaken The Wretched to become number one on those drive-in charts. Both genre films, in addition to expanding into more drive-in theaters in the weeks to come, are also available for digital rental through all major VOD outlets.

Meagan reviewed both The Wretched and Becky for us.
