Yesterday we celebrated the Alien franchise having new life, while today we mourn the loss of one of its stars.
Veteran British actor Ian Holm, who starred as the villainous android Ash in Ridley Scott’s 1979 sci-fi masterpiece Alien, has died at the age of 88, Deadline reports via The Guardian.
Holm won a BAFTA and was Oscar-nominated for his role in 1981 hit Chariots of Fire and played Bilbo Baggins in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Hobbit films, adds the site. Holm, who went headless in Scott’s Alien, also appeared in Terry Gilliam’s Time Bandits, From Hell, The Fifth Element with Bruce Willis & Milla Jovovich, and even David Cronenberg’s Naked Lunch andeXistenZ.
In a message to the Guardian, Holm’s agent said: “It is with great sadness that the actor Sir Ian Holm CBE passed away this morning at the age of 88. He died peacefully in hospital, with his family and carer,” adding that his illness was Parkinson’s related. “Charming, kind and ferociously talented, we will miss him hugely.”
We send our thoughts and prayers to his surviving friends and family.
