Last we heard, Christopher Columbus (Home Alone) was set to direct Blumhouse’s feature film adaptation of Scott Cawthon’s popular video game Five Nights at Freddy’s, with Cawthon himself penning the script. The most recent update on the project was nearly two years ago, but producer Jason Blum promises that the radio silence doesn’t mean the project has stalled.
Speaking with Fandom last week – and specifically answering a question asked by our buddy Cris Parker – Blum teased that the Five Nights movie is “rapidly moving forward.”
“It’s super active, so I really feel like we have a very good shot at getting to see a Five Nights at Freddy’s movie,” Blum answered Parker’s question. “I feel like it’s really moving forward; it’s not stalled or anything else. It might seem that way because we have don’t have any announcements about it, but it’s not stalled. It’s moving rapidly forward. I don’t want to put a timeline on it, but soon we’ll get a movie. I really feel confident about that.”
What was the status of the project the last time we were provided with an update, you ask?
“I had a script written,” Cawthon had told Polygon back in 2018. “Jason [Blum] liked it, and Chris Columbus liked it too, but I tossed it. I had a different idea for it, one that I liked better. I take responsibility for this delay; it’s my fault. [I’m] determined to find the right story.”
“I’m sticking to what I’ve always said… either the right movie gets made or no movie gets made,” Cawthon added at the time. “I hate delaying a project that’s already seen so many delays, but I have to go with my instincts on what I think will be exciting and interesting, and what I think the fanbase will really want to see. If that means that I have to start over ten more times, then that’s what I’m going to do. The good thing is that each attempt gets better and better, in my opinion. So, despite the delays, it’s going in the right direction.”
