Syfy Wire is hosting a special 30th anniversary Gremlins 2 watch party tonight, June 29th at 8/7c over on Twitter, with stars Zach Galligan and Robert Picardo taking part in the fun.
Ahead of the virtual event, Syfy.com sat down with Galligan to get his thoughts on upcoming animated series “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai,” as well as the film franchise’s future.
“Secrets of the Mogwai” is currently in the works for HBO Max, set in 1920s Shanghai and telling the story of how 10-year-old Sam Wing met the young Mogwai called Gizmo.
For starters, Galligan himself is not involved in the series.
“It seems like what they’re going to do is reeducate us on the mythology surrounding Gremlins and Gizmo and Mogwai and, of course, most importantly, the three nebulous rules,” Galligan told Syfy, speaking about the series. “You have to figure that they’re using the animated series as a stepping stone to the larger endgame, which is a live-action Gremlins movie. That would be my assumption and it’s really not that much of a stretch to think that that’s what they’re doing.”
He continued, “[Joe Dante] said that the people involved in it are very smart and very respectful of the franchise and doing a very good job with a lot of interesting ideas. Of course, that’s pretty vague, but it was overwhelmingly positive and I know Joe well enough for close to 40 years to know that if he was grumpy about and was unhappy with the way things were going, he’d probably wouldn’t have told me.”
Dante, it should be noted, is serving as a creative consultant on “Secrets of the Mogwai.”
What about the potential third film the animated prequel could be paving the way for? Galligan has some ideas on what he’d like to see from Gremlins 3, telling the site: “I would like to see some kind of reunification with Billy and Gizmo. The relationship between them is kind of the heart and soul of both movies.” Read the full interview for more Gremlins 3 talk from Galligan.
