[Podcasts] The Boo Crew Goes on Lockdown with Machete Himself, Danny Trejo!

Machete don’t text. But Machete DOES listen to Bloody Disgusting’s Boo Crew Podcast! On this episode, the ‘Crew is joined by the iconic and legendary actor Danny Trejo!

Trejo’s latest project is his most personal one to date. Available now on digital, Inmate #1: The Rise of Danny Trejo. This biography documentary chronicles Trejo’s life from an early age of drug use and a life of crime to his time at the toughest maximum security penitentiaries in the world. His road to recovery and redemption, then becoming one of the world’s most recognizable actors and personalities is what plays out as one of the greatest transformations of human character ever put into a story. But his story is very real.

Directed by Brett Harvey, the amazing documentary is packed with commentary and storytelling by actors and those who knew Danny best over the years such as Cheech Marin, Michelle Rodriguez, and director Robert Rodriguez, along with his family and friends.

Chatting with the Boo Crew on Episode 140, Trejo discusses his work with Robert Rodriguez in the Machete franchise, the Desperado films and his work with Rob Zombie in Devil’s Rejects, Halloween and Three From Hell.

Trejo explains the origin of one of his most popular characters:

“While we were doing Desperado, Robert (Rodridguez) saw that I was out in the crowd, we were working in Acuña, Mexico. All the Mexicans would gather around and ask me for my autograph and stuff and Robert said “Hey, they think you’re the star of this movie!”. And I said “You mean I’m Not? What are you talking about?”. I was signing autographs and taking pictures and he says you know I have this character I want you to think about…Machete. This guy that fights with machetes. That’s all I needed. I’m in. We did that and we did Spy Kids and we said hey lets call this guy “Uncle Machete”. We did that and then they did Grindhouse and they needed fake trailers. Robert said “I got one!”. So we did that fake trailer. When we came out of that theater, everybody was saying “Hey we gotta make that movie!” That’s how it actually started. It started 20 years ago. When it came out (Machete), it was iconic, it was crazy. I loved watching little kids come up for Halloween dressed as Machete. That was so cool!”

In all of the hundreds of movies and TV shows that Danny Trejo has played a role in, the experiences have granted him a pedestal to stand on above the rest for yet another reason: He’s the most killed actor on screen! Website Buzz Bingo tallied up the kill count recently to reveal that Trejo has surpassed the record previously held by Christopher Lee!

On the Boo Crew Podcast, Trejo shares some funny stories about working with Director Robert Rodriguez and Rob Zombie on their respective genre films and some serious stories about his time in prison. He also discussed his most difficult role to date – co-starring in a new upcoming movie with his director son Gilbert Trejo titled From A Son.

And as it turns out, Trejo is a big horror fan himself. Listen to the episode to hear about a memorable experience he had seeing 1976’s The Omen!

Inmate #1:The Rise of Danny Trejo is a journey that needs to be seen and experienced. It’s not everyday you hear such a remarkable, motivational story of redemption – about second chances or about one who’s succeeding in doing better not just for himself and his family but for the community and helping others every single day of his life. Harvey allows for Danny to tell this story in his own words. It’s authentic and captivating.
