[R.I.P.] ‘Angel Heart’ Director Alan Parker Has Passed Away

Today brings with it the sad news that Oscar-nominated filmmaker Alan Parker, known to horror fans for his 1987 film Angel Heart, has passed away at the age of 76 this week.

The British Film Institute says that Parker died after a long battle with illness.

Alan Parker was twice nominated for “Best Director” at the Academy Awards, first for Midnight Express in 1979 and subsequently for Mississippi Burning 10 years later, in 1989.

Parker was also nominated “Best Director” at the 1997 Golden Globes for Evita, while scoring Globes nominations for both Midnight Express and Mississippi Burning as well.

The British filmmaker’s impressively diverse resume also includes Bugsy Malone, Fame, Pink Floyd: The Wall, Birdy, Angela’s Ashes and The Life of David Gale.

Angel Heart, which Parker wrote (based on William Hjortsberg’s 1978 novel Falling Angel) and directed, starred Robert De Niro as Louis Cyphre, who hires Mickey Rourke’s character Harry Angel to track down a singer. As it turns out, Cyphre is the Devil himself.

Parker is survived by wife Lisa Moran and four children.
