Earlier this year we got the first look at mind-bending psychological horror The Medium, the new game from Layers of Fear and Blair Witch developer Bloober Team. Today at the Xbox Games Showcase, there was a deeper look at its unique dual-reality system.
The trailer showcases that The Medium‘s Silent Hill-like shifting realities coexist throughout, with events happening in one version while you’re in the other. The more normal reality is pretty dour and dark on its own, but the other is a hellish nightmare world with walls made of stitched up skin, and unspeakable creatures lurking around every corner.
It seems more and more like it’ll be an ambitious step up for Bloober, a team that has long meddled in shifting perspectives and messing with reality in its games. Not many games for next-gen consoles have shown what that power could do beyond making nicer looking games, but The Medium is one with a clear next-gen idea by having two versions of the same world running side-by-side in the same game. It’ll be fascinating to see if and how it’s pulled off.
The Medium will be an Xbox Series X launch exclusive, so you’ll be swapping between realities on Xbox first.
