In the latest quarterly results for Capcom, as expected, Resident Evil leads the way. However, despite being referred to as “solid”, the numbers for the Resident Evil 3 remake (which we reviewed here) unfortunately pale in comparison to its predecessor.
RE3 recorded 2.7 million sales in three months since its launch back in March, which is still quite good for any game. However, given Capcom’s reliance on the recent enthusiasm for the franchise (and its recent 100 million achievement) sales of the remake fall behind Resident Evil 2 remake’s sales across the same length of time, which boasted more than 4 million sales.
Things get more suspect when you compare sales to Resident Evil 5, 6 and 7, according to business development manager Alex Aniel. RE3 also lags behind those three in comparing their post-launch numbers at this point. RE5 moved 4.4 million copies in its first three weeks, while RE6, with its troubled launch, moved 4.5 million in 3 months. RE7 managed 3.5 million in two months.
Capcom’s statement regarding RE3 as being a “finished product” with no post-launch content may also have been a factor for some, but this might be a bit of a concern for them, especially with Resident Evil Village on the way.
