Director Rob Savage‘s Host (read Meagan’s review) has quickly become the latest low-budget, indie horror sensation, debuting on Shudder last week to nearly universal critical acclaim and countless bold proclamations about it being one of the scariest horror movies in years. The 60-minute film is part of the “screenlife” sub-genre, filmed via Zoom during quarantine and centered on a group of friends accidentally unleashing a demonic entity that terrorizes and dispatches the young women one-by-one. So what’s next for Savage, post-Host?
Speaking with Jimmy Champane and George Fresard on the Fear Frequency podcast last week, Savage and Host co-writer Jed Shepherd touched upon what they’ve got in the works. For starters, we already know that Savage is teaming up with producer Sam Raimi for a “one-location supernatural horror movie” that doesn’t yet have a title, announced just last month.
“We’ve got a bunch of things that we’re developing. We just announced this project we’re really excited about that Sam Raimi’s producing,” the duo told the show. “I think for us, found footage is just another medium to tell horror stories. It’s not like we’ve ticked it off and we’re never going back. We’ve got so many more ideas for cool shit we can do within this format.”
They continued, “And we’ve obviously discussed potential other ideas to do while in lockdown as well. If there’s a call for it. And if Shudder wants us to.”
“We’ve got a fucking amazing followup to this. It’s gonna blow Host out of the water. If there’s an audience for it,” they tease.
For now, you can stream Host via Shudder today. It’ll only take up an hour of your time, and it’s well worth the watch if you’re looking for some fun scares while you’re stuck at home.
