Yes, That Really is Colin Farrell as Penguin in ‘The Batman’ Trailer

It’s kind of incredible how much footage was on display in this past weekend’s official teaser trailer for The Batman out of DC FanDome, because as director Matt Reeves explained during the movie’s panel, only 25% of the film has actually been shot at this point. Production was halted due to the pandemic, so it’s a miracle we even have a trailer right now.

The FanDome teaser gave us a bunch of footage of Robert Pattinson‘s Batman/Bruce Wayne and even our first glimpse at Colin Farrell as the Penguin, though we honestly didn’t even notice the latter appearance until it was pointed out to us. That’s because Farrell is completely unrecognizable in the film, transformed into the DC villain with classic practical makeup.

As Heather Wixson explained over the weekend, Dick Smith protégée Michael Marino transformed Farrell for the movie, which Marino himself – in case you still had any doubts – confirmed on his official Instagram account last night. While many didn’t believe it, the makeup artist lets us know that yes, that really is Colin Farrell underneath all those prosthetics.

At a time when superhero movies are dominated by CG effects, it sure is nice to see practical work shining bright in The Batman. Good old fashioned movie magic, folks. Can’t beat it.

Warner Bros/DC’s The Batman is currently set for release on October 1st, 2021.
