Hello out there all you loyal viewers!
We hope everyone is doing well and performing their civic duties in every form and fashion. Today we have a couple shorts that embody both the approaching Halloween season and the isolation of the past six months in various forms. I like to think these couple of creature features are manifestations of all of our fears in 2020, lurking in the shadows, just waiting for the right time to pounce.
The first one up is called The House on the Lake, coming from director Damien Kazan. Here, we have a story of a young woman at home alone in a seemingly isolated woodland area right on the lake. What could possibly go wrong? I’ll tell you what can go wrong. While going to the bathroom you start hearing strange knocks on the door, at your most vulnerable state. I love the tension building in this very simple “go check on the strange noises” horror trope. We’ve seen it a million times before. However, sometimes it’s about how you do it, rather than what you did. The lighting and camera setups do a great job of telling the story in this one.
The second short we have for you this month comes from director Timothy Troy, entitled Ding Dong. No, it’s not what you think…the popular chocolatey, cream-filled treat some of us spent time stuffing down our gullets during quarantine. I’m talking about the sound a doorbell makes when we’re all alone in our house trying to get into bed, scaring us half to death. That’s exactly what happens in this vignette. Poor Alexis just wants to get some damn sleep, but that just isn’t possible with someone ringing your doorbell every two minutes. Is it just the neighborhood kids screwing around? Or is it something far more sinister? I guess you’ll have to watch and find out.
Stay safe out there, folks. Fall is approaching and it’s our time to shine. So get out your pumpkin-scented candles and big sweaters and cozy up to a good horror movie. We’ll do our part and offer up some appetizing options.
