It didn’t receive a particularly warm reception when it came out back in 2005, nor did it set the box office on fire, but Jaume Collet-Serra’s House of Wax has aged quite well here in the horror world, with many fans embracing it as one of the better remakes to come along in the early-mid 2000s. The film just celebrated its 15th anniversary earlier this year, and writers Chad Hayes and Carey Hayes (The Conjuring) reflect on their House on Wax in a new interview with ComicBook.com. Specifically, they recall the prequel that never was.
Back in 2005, House of Wax scared up $68 million at the worldwide box office, but with a reported production budget of $40 million, well, it just wasn’t enough for Warner Bros.
“We did float the idea of a prequel, after it [came out], but the studio’s response is it didn’t do any big numbers at the box office,” Carey Hayes told ComicBook.com this month. “But if we approached it now, it could be a whole different story because of the fan base.”
He continued, “It’s like, the theater became full of people: how? You know? I mean, it’s a crazy story.”
Hayes is referring to the fact that the town in House of Wax is full of lifelike mannequins that are actually people covered in wax, and it seems the proposed prequel would’ve explored the early beginnings of how that horrifying town came to be. Alas, if we ever do see House of Wax up on the big screen again, it’s likely to be another full-on reboot/remake at this point.
