David Fincher Casts Doubt on the Future of “Mindhunter”

It’s been over a year since Netflix released the second season of “Mindhunter” and nearly a year since the show was put on “indefinite hold” in the wake of the second season’s arrival, leaving many to wonder if Netflix even has any plans on making a third season at this point. And even David Fincher, it seems, isn’t so sure that he and the team will be back.

Speaking with Vulture, Fincher explained that making a season of “Mindhunter” is both incredibly costly and incredibly time-consuming, which could spell the end of the series.

“We lived there for almost three years. Not year in and year out, but … probably six or seven months a year,” Fincher told the site. “Mindhunter was a lot for me. It’s a 90-hour workweek. It absorbs everything in your life. When I got done [with season 2], I was pretty exhausted, and I said, ‘I don’t know if I have it in me right now to break season three.’”

He continued, “For the viewership that it had, it was a very expensive show. We talked about, ‘Finish Mank and then see how you feel,’ but I honestly don’t think we’re going to be able to do it for less than I did season two. And on some level, you have to be realistic — dollars have to equal eyeballs.”

In other words, it sounds like not enough people were actually watching “Mindhunter” to justify the spend on another season, and in the world of television, well, that’s when a show ends.

Then again, we’ve also learned that anything is possible in the world of TV.
