Director André Øvredal Updates On ‘Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2’; “We Have a Great New Story”

Paramount and Entertainment One are teaming up to tell another round of scary stories, we learned earlier this year, with a sequel to last year’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark on the way. Director André Øvredal (The Autopsy of Jane Doe) is returning to direct the follow-up film, with Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman also returning to write the script.

Guillermo del Toro is once again also involved, reportedly with a “story by” credit.

The first film adapted horror tales from Alvin Schwartz’s three Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books, bringing Stephen Gammell’s terrifying illustrations to life for the first time. Presumably, the sequel will be pulling from other tales in those books, but will it continue the wraparound storyline from the first movie or take things in a new direction entirely?

Speaking with Coming Soon this week, Øvredal mostly kept his lips sealed.

We have a great new story and some fun, scary stories implemented in a good way. I’m very excited about the sequel,” he told the site. “I shouldn’t [say] and I can’t really, you never know what you can and can not say about these things, it’s hard to talk about at this stage. I know it’s been out there in the public already, so I can’t give away too much [chuckles].”

Øvredal added, “I’m part of the process of developing, not the writing because it’s Dan and Kevin, who wrote the first one, but I’m definitely part of the development process on this one.”

For what it’s worth, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark star Zoe Colletti told Decider just last month that she’s “in the dark a little bit” about what’s going on with the upcoming sequel.

The first film ended with Colletti’s heroine Stella Nicholls vowing to save her missing friends, taken by the various Gammell-inspired creatures unleashed throughout the film.
