At this point in time we still have no idea whether or not Bryan Fuller‘s brilliant but short-lived NBC series “Hannibal” is ever going to find new life elsewhere, but it remains a future possibility that both Fuller and star Mads Mikkelsen are more than happy to imagine and talk about. Speaking with Indiewire this week, Mikkelsen shared his own Season 4 hopes.
If “Hannibal” is ever brought back to life, could we see the show’s take on the iconic events of The Silence of the Lambs? It’s no secret that Fuller and the team were never ever able to gain the rights to that story from MGM, with the studio more recently joining forces with CBS for a sequel series titled “Clarice,” but that doesn’t mean such a thing will never happen.
This past July, as a matter of fact, Fuller himself kept that door open. And in his new chat with Indiewire, Mikkelsen touched upon the same future possibility for the “Hannibal” series.
“I don’t think it’s a secret that if it does happen, we would love to go into Silence of the Lambs,” Mikkelsen told the site. “That’s always been an issue because they didn’t have the rights for that book. But that’s obviously the most famous part and we’d love to go in there. We’d obviously switch it around a little and do all kinds of crazy stuff with it.”
He continued, “That story is so interesting and the characters in it are as interesting. We’d switch around the genders and maybe even put two characters into one. We would love to find someone to play Buffalo Bill. That’s going to be tough. We found a Hannibal, so it’s possible.”
Mikkelsen also noted during the chat that if he hadn’t already played Mason Verger in the second season of “Hannibal,” Michael Pitt would be a great choice to play Buffalo Bill.
Again, the “Hannibal” team doesn’t actually have the rights to The Silence of the Lambs storyline/characters, nor has the show been renewed, but it’s always fun to imagine.
For now, that remains all we can do.
