Our box office reports this year have been interesting, to say the least, with hardly any new releases to speak of and classic films like Ghostbusters and Hocus Pocus topping the charts as a result. But there was actually a brand spankin’ new theatrical release for the horror genre this past weekend, that being Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon‘s Freaky.
The body-swapping slasher-comedy opened in 2,472 theaters across the United States over the weekend and came in at #1 on the box office charts, making $3.7 million domestically.
In pre-pandemic times, we can only assume Freaky would’ve scared up a whole lot more money in its debut weekend, as similar film Happy Death Day made $26 million in its opening weekend and even Happy Death Day 2U, which underperformed at the box office, made $9.5 million in its domestic opening. To make a comparison that’s far more relevant to the current pandemic times we’ve found ourselves in, with many theaters still not open and many movie-goers not going to the movies, Come Play opened to $3 million domestically just last month.
Come Play is currently sitting in the fourth spot on the box office charts.
Blumhouse and Universal’s Freaky was made on a reported production budget of just $6 million, so the film should have no trouble recouping its production costs. And it won’t be long before it starts raking in that Premium VOD money, as we’ve been told that Freaky will be coming home the week of November 30th – an exact date hasn’t yet been provided.
In Freaky, “Seventeen-year-old Millie Kessler (Kathryn Newton, Blockers, HBO’s Big Little Lies) is just trying to survive the bloodthirsty halls of Blissfield High and the cruelty of the popular crowd. But when she becomes the newest target of The Butcher (Vince Vaughn), her town’s infamous serial killer, her senior year becomes the least of her worries.
“When The Butcher’s mystical ancient dagger causes him and Millie to wake up in each other’s bodies, Millie learns that she has just 24 hours to get her body back before the switch becomes permanent and she’s trapped in the form of a middle-aged maniac forever.”
