Controversial Horror Game ‘Devotion’ Will Finally be Re-Released This Friday

Nearly two years after it was pulled from Steam, Red Candle Game’s Devotion is finally going back on sale.

The Taiwanese developer’s follow-up to Detention was mired in controversy due to derogatory in-game depictions of Chinese President Xi Jinping, which subsequently led to review-bombing, and the eventual deletion of the game on Steam’s store page. Despite an apology from the developer, the situation remained at an impasse. But, from Friday, the game will be available to buy digitally again on GoG.com for $16.99.

Previously, the only way to get a hold of Devotion was to get a physical copy from Taiwan back in June, and even that only ran for a week. It was at least a glimmer of hope that we might see the game again one day, and that day comes this Friday.

After a turbulent couple of years, Red Candle’s fortunes have looked a little brighter recently. Its previous game Detention got a well-received movie adaptation earlier this year, and a Netflix series based on it also dropped last week. Hopefully, the developer can move on from the controversy and go about making a new game in relative peace.
