We had recently learned that Morgan Creek was developing a reboot of The Exorcist and it looks like Blumhouse is on board the project as well, The Observer reports tonight.
According to the site, David Gordon Green (Halloween) is in talks to direct!
The Observer is referring to the project as a “sequel,” it’s interesting to note. It’s also interesting to note that Gordon Green is also attached to HBO’s “Hellraiser” series.
William Friedkin is definitely not involved.
The Exorcist franchise hasn’t been on the big screen since the 2005 release of Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist, an alternate version of the previous year’s Exorcist: The Beginning. Those films came in the wake of 1977’s The Exorcist II: The Heretic and 1990’s The Exorcist III.
More recently, “The Exorcist” became a short-lived television series at Fox, which was surprisingly excellent and cleverly took place in the same world as the original classic.
Alas, the series was cancelled after just two seasons.
Given its status as one of the most iconic horror films of all time, it’s quite frankly surprising that it’s taken this long for The Exorcist to return to theaters. Especially after the cancellation of the Fox series, it was only a matter of time. Stay tuned for more as we learn it.
