Marvel Promises Sam Raimi’s ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ is “Scary, Thrilling and Mind-Bending”

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is getting its first “scary” movie with upcoming sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, being directed by horror veteran Sam Raimi.

During Disney’s Investor Day presentation last night, Marvel’s Kevin Feige promised that Raimi’s Doctor Strange will be “thrilling, scary and mind-bending,” while also adding that the studio is “really pushing the boundaries of storytelling” with it. The film will connect to the events of “WandaVision,” and also to the events of the upcoming third Spider-Man film.

Feige also revealed that Xochitl Gomez (“The Baby-Sitters Club,” pictured below) has joined the cast as America Chavez, while also confirming that Benedict WongChiwetel Ejiofor, Elizabeth Olsen and Rachel McAdams will all be reprising their MCU roles in the film. Benedict Cumberbatch, of course, will be leading the cast once again as Doctor Strange.

We had been worried in the wake of Scott Derrickson departing the project that the initial promises of a scary MCU film were going to be walked back a bit, so it’s great to hear that nothing has seemingly changed in regards to those plans. Then again, Sam Raimi directing the film was probably already enough to ensure a horror-tinged superhero movie!

Raimi’s return to the world of Marvel will release in theaters on March 25, 2022.
