After five films and two seasons of a really, really good television series that was cancelled too soon, Morgan Creek is reportedly working on a brand new feature film take on The Exorcist, which we first heard rumblings about this past summer. One person who won’t be involved with that reboot? William Friedkin, the director of the original horror classic.
Taking to Twitter this morning, Friedkin clarified that though IMDb lists him as being involved with the upcoming Morgan Creek movie, that couldn’t be further from the truth.
Friedkin tweets, “There’s a rumor on IMDB that I’m involved with a new version of The Exorcist. It’s a flat-out lie. There’s not enough money or motivation in the world to get me to do this.”
Friedkin has not been involved with the Exorcist franchise since he directed the original movie, though he was interviewed for the doc Leap of Faith, now streaming on Shudder.
The Exorcist franchise hasn’t been on the big screen since the 2005 release of Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist, an alternate version of the previous year’s Exorcist: The Beginning. Those films came in the wake of 1977’s The Exorcist II: The Heretic and 1990’s The Exorcist III.
More recently, “The Exorcist” became a short-lived television series at Fox, which was surprisingly excellent and cleverly took place in the same world as the original classic.
Alas, the series was cancelled after just two seasons.
Given its status as one of the most iconic horror films of all time, it’s quite frankly surprising that it’s taken this long for The Exorcist to return to theaters. Especially after the cancellation of the Fox series, it was only a matter of time. Stay tuned for more as we learn it.
