While obviously not as popular as the big names of Survival Horror, Koei Temco’s Fatal Frame series definitely has a special place for many fans. And with the series hitting the big 2-0 later this year, series producer Keisuke Kikuchi (who has teased in the past that he’d like to return to the series) appears to want to do something special.
According to Japanese website Famitsu (and picked up by My Nintendo News), which interviewed 101 developers in its annual feature to find out what they are hoping and planning for in the new year, Kikuchi (now with Konami) said the following regarding Fatal Frame:
“2020 was a year where things that were normal were no longer normal. I’d like to look at what’s important and what I love once more, and create a game with a fresh perspective. 2021 is also the 20th anniversary of the Fatal Frame series, so I’d like to celebrate it in some way if possible.”
The next line is equally interesting: “We’re working hard to announce some titles by spring. We’re developing a wide range of titles, from those currently under adjustment to those with pending names.”
Obviously, this is not a slam dunk thing. The last Fatal Frame game was 2014’s Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water for the Wii U. And the last time we even saw a trace of the series was Maiden of Black Water‘s protagonist Yuri Kozukata being relegated to an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in 2018.
However, with Konami seemingly in a constant state of whatever when it comes to its legendary franchises, it would be nice to see another developer with a beloved series give fans something to hope for this year.
