Horror movies such as Black Christmas, Ginger Snaps, My Bloody Valentine and Scanners call Canada home, with those and others spotlighted in Caelum Vatnsdal’s 2004 book They Came from Within: A History of Canadian Horror Cinema. Rue Morgue brings us the word this week that Vatnsdal’s book is now being turned into a documentary nearly twenty years later.
Justin McConnell (Clapboard Jungle) will be directing the feature length documentary.
McConnell tells Rue Morgue, “I’m excited to start working on They Came from Within. Canada has a rich history of horror cinema and unique circumstances that have brought that cinema to life. I was looking for a new project I could make safely ‘in these uncertain times,’ and this fits the bill nicely while waiting for the world to spool back up.”
“Other countries have had their genre cinema showcased in an entertaining way with films like Not Quite Hollywood and Machete Maidens Unleashed, and Canada is long overdue for this kind of treatment,” McConnell adds.
Stay tuned for more as we learn it.
