As you may recall, it was announced back in 2019 that the collective known as Radio Silence – Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett and Chad Villella – would be teaming with Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) on a new horror-comedy involving a bear, but that project has since gone through some changes.
Reported by THR today, the Universal movie is now titled Cocaine Bear, described as a “thriller” and with Elizabeth Banks (Charlie’s Angels) now finding herself in the director’s chair.
The movie, THR notes, “is based on an untitled spec written by Jimmy Warden that is inspired by true events that took place in Kentucky in 1985.”
The basis gist of the story is that a 175-pound black bear was found dead from an overdose after ingesting massive amounts of cocaine dropped into the woods by a drug smuggler.
Lord and Miller are still producing, but the Radio Silence team is no longer involved.
