One of the key creatives involved in the Gremlins franchise was Chris Walas, the special effects makeup artist who designed and created the titular creatures. Walas subsequently won an Academy Award for his work on David Cronenberg’s 1986 take on The Fly, which paved the way for Walas making his directorial debut on the film’s 1989 sequel, The Fly II.
But we’re here to talk about Gremlins today, as Walas took to Twitter over the weekend to share a fun little treat with fans: the original rough sketches for Gizmo and his Mogwai pals!
“Found my very first rough sketches for the Mogwai. I think you can see the tarsier influence here,” Walas captioned the image tweet, which gives us an early look at our furry friends.
Tarsiers are haplorrhine primates that indeed served as the basis for Gizmo’s iconic design, which evolved a bit from the time this sketch was drawn to his eventual appearance on screen.
Check out Walas’ rough sketches below, along with “an abandoned Gremlin design sketch”!
