‘Wyrmwood’ Director Heads to the ‘Dark West’ for Vampire Movie Being Compared to ‘Near Dark’

One of the best vampire movies of all time, and a personal favorite of mine, is Kathryn Bigelow’s Near Dark, a unique vampire-western with a vibe all of its own. And while there can never be another Near Dark, to be sure, it’s at least exciting to hear that the next film from director Kiah Roache-Turner (Wyrmwood) is hoping to tap into a similar vein.

Announced by The Wrap today, Roache-Turner is directing and co-writing a vampire movie titled Dark West, a screenplay originally written by Richard Kadrey (Sandman Slim).

The Wrap details, “Dark West is a vampire revenge thriller set on the highways of Texas that follows two car thieves who accidentally T-bone a pair of vampires in the middle of the night.”

“The story is in the vein of the classic ’80s horror films The Hitcher and Near Dark.” Both of those fan-favorite ’80s films, it’s interesting to note, were written by Eric Red.

The project comes courtesy of Winterlight Pictures.
