The posters for Sam Raimi‘s Army of Darkness, the third film in the Evil Dead franchise, depict Bruce Campbell‘s Ash Williams with the body of a professional wrestler, looking like he’s been carved out of stone with bulging muscles that you won’t exactly find in the movie itself. You’ve probably never wondered *why*, as such cool artwork doesn’t exactly need a reason to exist. But there is a story behind that one, and Campbell relays it on Twitter this week.
Back in the early ’90s, Arnold Schwarzenegger was one of the hottest names in Hollywood, and it was Schwarzenegger’s iconic physique that indeed inspired those wild AoD posters!
Campbell explains, responding to a fan’s tweet about one of the original Army of Darkness posters, “Producer Dino De Laurentiis had his hands all over that. It’s the foreign poster. He knew that Schwarzenegger sold overseas, so he made me look like Arnold. It’s very silly.”
“Silly,” to be sure. But also insanely cool. Mind you, Campbell’s Ash never needed bulging biceps to kick Deadite ass and save the world, with the films presenting him more as an “everyman” hero who’s humorously bumbling through his destiny. And really, who the hell needs 24-inch pythons when you’ve got a chainsaw hand that you can rev up at the first sign of trouble?
