One of the more unique films over the past few years was the Japanese One Cut of the Dead, a zombie comedy that flipped the script quite literally on a film crew. The extremely uncommon story arc came riddled with problems, making it ripe for a remake. While that usually happens here in the States, Shinichiro Ueda’s $25,000 micro horror is getting a remake in France under the title Final Cut.
Michel Hazanavicius’ remake of the 2017 cult Japanese hit has already begun filming in the outskirts of Paris, reports ScreenDaily, who adds that the previously-announced lead Romain Duris will be joined by Bérénice Bejo, Grégory Gadebois, Finnegan Oldfield, Matilda Lutz, Sébastian Chassagne and Raphaël Quenard as well as emerging talents Jean-Pascal Zadi, Lyes Salem, Simone Hazanavicius and Luana Bajrami.
“Set against the backdrop of a B-movie shoot that is descending into disaster, Duris plays the director who seems to be the only one invested with the necessary energy to keep the low-budget zombie film afloat.
“As he tries to gee up jaded technicians and uninterested actors, shooting is disturbed by the arrival of authentic undead.”
The Japanese zombie-comedy was a huge hit out of Fantasia, with Meagan raving in her review for us that the film “charms with surprising zombie comedy,” while also adding: “For those looking for laughs and commentary on the passions of low budget horror filmmaking, this is a must watch.”
The original film went on to gross more than $30m worldwide. It was inspired by Ryoichi Wada’s play Ghost In The Box and produced by Enbu Seminar, explains the site.
