‘Furiosa’: George Miller’s ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ Prequel Starring Anya Taylor-Joy Will Film Next Year

George Miller is currently developing a Mad Max: Fury Road spinoff movie centered on Charlize Theron‘s Imperator Furiosa character, with The Witch and The New Mutants star Anya Taylor-Joy taking over the role. It’s a prequel simply titled Furiosa at this time, and we’ve learned today that the new movie will begin filming in Australia next year.

It was announced during a press conference over the weekend, Indiewire reports this morning, that Miller’s hotly-anticipated Furiosa will be the biggest production in Australian cinema history, filming in New South Wales. Indiewire adds in their report that the Warner Bros. blockbuster “will pump at least $350M AUD into the local economy and create 850 new jobs.”

Whereas Fury Road essentially happened over three days and two nights, this happens over many years,” Miller teased during the press conference that took place over the weekend.

Furiosa is currently set for release in theaters on June 23, 2023.

Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Candyman) will also star in the new movie. Furiosa will tell the origin story of the character Theron made famous in Fury Road.

Miller is co-writing and directing the movie for Warner Bros.

Back in 2015, Mad Max: Fury Road grossed nearly $400 million worldwide at the box office and won SIX Oscars, while also scoring rave reviews nearly across the entire board.

Last we heard, Miller also intends on making sequels centered on Tom Hardy‘s Mad Max.
