The future of Legendary’s MonsterVerse continues to look bright, as Adam Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong remains at the top of the box office with an impressive worldwide take.
Since the film’s release in theaters late last month, Godzilla vs. Kong has to date made $358 million at the worldwide box office, $70 million of which was made here in the United States.
In its second weekend of theatrical release in the States, Godzilla vs. Kong added $13.4 million to its domestic take over the weekend, with the film currently playing in 3,084 theaters.
Godzilla vs. Kong is now the highest grossing domestic release of the pandemic, and it’s only a matter of time before the film surpasses Tenet‘s worldwide take ($363 million) to become the highest grossing worldwide release of the past year. It’s also incredibly close to surpassing the $387 million worldwide take of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which will be happening in a matter of days. An incredibly impressive achievement when you consider the fact that the previous MonsterVerse movie was released during pre-pandemic times, when theaters were able to pack in audiences at full capacity. Also of note, Godzilla vs. Kong has been available to watch at home in the U.S. this whole time, and even still it’s bringing people to theaters.
Will we be getting more MonsterVerse movies from Warner Bros. and Legendary in the future? Or was Godzilla vs. Kong indeed the end game for this particular universe, with no further movies planned at this time? Given how well the film is holding its own at the box office even during such unusual times, well, it’s looking like anything is possible at this point.
And with #ContinuetheMonsterverse trending on Twitter in recent weeks, it’s pretty safe to say the fans are asking for it. So here’s hoping we haven’t seen the last of these Titans!
