‘Meg 2’ Director Ben Wheatley Wants to Direct a ‘DOOM’ Movie

Director Ben Wheatley has been quite busy as of late, and now the director of the upcoming Meg 2 has decided to toss another bone for DOOM fans. In a recent appearance on The Playlist podcast, Wheatley expressed his desire to do his own take on the famed first-person shooter.

During the podcast, when the topic of Wheatley being forced to drop out of directing the upcoming Tomb Raider 2 due to scheduling conflicts, the director mentioned his desire to still work on a film adaptation of a video game. To which, he mentioned id Software’s baby.

“I still want to make a DOOM film though,” says Wheatley. “I know it’s been done, but come on! Or Counter-Strike, that would be the one I’d like to make.”

Obviously, expressing a desire to direct an entry in the series is one thing as opposed to actually doing it, but with fans divided on the beautiful mess that was Tony Giglio’s 2019 DOOM: Annihilation (and with Giglio expressing a desire to direct a sequel to that one), why not give Wheatley a chance? Plus, given the appeal, he’d have a better shot at DOOM than Counter-Strike.

As for The Meg 2, Jason Statham is expected to return for the sequel and have creative involvement on the project, with a script written by Dean Georgaris and Jon & Erich Hoeber.
