New ‘Resident Evil Village’ Art Reveals Game’s Map, New Character

IGN has provided some new art for Resident Evil Village to end your Friday, including the first art for a character that plays a huge role in the game (and no, it’s not more Lady Dimitrescu).

For starters, the map of the village where the game takes place has been revealed, showing four major locations: Castle Dimitrescu (which is where the PS5 exclusive Maiden demo takes place), Moreau’s Reservoir, Heisenberg’s Factory (no Breaking Bad jokes), and House Beneviento.

According to director Morimasa Sato, Village actually shares similarities with Resident Evil 4 (which also started out in a rural village) in terms of its variety of gameplay and enemies. “When you hear the word ‘village’, you might imagine quaint houses lined up along a street, but that’s not really enough to make a videogame out of,” explains Sato. “Especially in a horror game, I think it’s important to keep providing new experiences along the way. Within the village, it’s important to keep delivering new surprises to the player.”

The other big news (and in another RE4 similarity) is Mother Miranda, who is worshipped by the villagers in Village (not unlike Los Iluminados and Sadler in RE4). Not much is known about Mother Miranda, other than the footage revealed so far of villagers chanting her name, and Lady Dimitrescu conversing with her over the phone.

Capcom has fortunately unveiled a portrait of the mysterious woman, which appears as a sort of religious iconography. Sato explains that she was named “mother” in the religious meaning of the word, but wouldn’t say much more in terms of what else that might mean.

“For Mother Miranda, I think it’s better for the players to find out for themselves by playing the game,” says Sato. “But I’ll say this: Mother Miranda and the inner side of her character are extremely important factors in the game.”

Another image shows Ethan and Chris Redfield (with Ethan’s baby) in front of Mother Miranda, who is wearing a mask that’s akin to a crow, which art director Tomonori Takano explains was intentional as the main motif for Mother Miranda’s design. “The mask resembles a crow’s beak,” Takano says. “As a symbol of horror, crows function as a theme for Village in its entirety as well, and they appear in the actual game. Since she has a symbolic role within the village, we implemented that same design theme for Mother Miranda.”

Obviously, Capcom is hesitant to reveal too much more, but they might also be waiting for the second Resident Evil Showcase happening next week.

Resident Evil Village arrives on Google Stadia, PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series on May 7, alongside Resident Evil RE:Verse.
