‘Resident Evil Village’ Castle Demo Makes Reference to The Merchant From ‘Resident Evil 4’

Because we all love a good reference to The Merchant from Resident Evil 4, Capcom decided to drop a little Easter Egg in the Resident Evil Village Castle demo when it was available for PlayStation owners over the weekend. And of course, it involves the new “merchant” in The Duke.

When you first encounter the Duke in a room off to the side of the main hall in Castle Dimitrescu, you’re given the opportunity to trade with him after a short introductory cutscene. And much like RE4‘s Merchant, the Duke will rattle off a line when you’re conducting business. One such line caught a Twitter fan’s attention, which makes a not-so-subtle reference to “an old friend”:

It’s kind of a no-brainer that The Duke would immediately be seen as a callback to the iconic Merchant, so good on Capcom with going along with it. No word on if you can somehow kill The Duke, though if you could, much like doing that in RE4, it would probably be ill-advised.

Resident Evil Village arrives May 7 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Google Stadia, and PC via Steam.

Big thanks to RelyOnHorror for finding this one.
