[R.I.P.] Makeup Effects Artist Cleve Hall Has Passed Away

We’ve learned the sad news this week that special effects makeup artist Cleve Hall, known to many fans as the “Monster Man,” has passed away this week at the age of 61 years old.

Born on June 22, 1959, Cleve Hall was bit by the horror bug at a young age, eventually starting his own special effects company, Imagimation Productions. Hall worked on a wide variety of horror movies over the years, including Nightmare in a Damaged Brain (1981), Ghoulies (1985), Re-Animator (1986), Troll (1986), TerrorVision (1986), and Demon Wind (1990).

But it was in 2012 that Cleve Hall was introduced to a whole new audience, starring in his own reality show titled “Monster Man” at the SYFY channel. The series followed Hall and his family, including daughter Constance Hall, keeping practical effects in the spotlight and documenting his work on films including 2-Headed Shark Attack as well as various other projects.

Outside the horror genre, Cleve Hall was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award in 2008 for his work on “Yo Gabba Gabba!” and he also created props for KISS, Insane Clown Posse and Alice Cooper. Hall also acted in various projects over the years, including Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (as Godzilla), Linnea Quigley’s Horror Workout, Return of the Living Dead: Necropolis, Diary of Death, Bloodstruck, The Summer of Massacre, and The Black Dahlia Haunting.

In the wake of her father’s passing, Constance Hall has started the Monster Man Memorial Fund through Indiegogo, raising money for burial costs to fulfill Cleve’s wishes.

Constance writes, “To all family, friends, fans and loved ones, we deeply regret to inform you of the passing of Cleve Hall or as he was lovingly known to many of his fans Monster Man. Cleve spent many many years as a special makeup FX artist, foam fabricator, and horror movie actor. He was a family man, an adored father, proud grandpa and a beloved mentor. He loved movies, Godzilla, sculpting, and inspiring the next generation of creatives. One of his proudest moments was playing Godzilla in Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. He was most known for his work in SyFy’s Monster Man and his work on the classic movie The Sandlot. He left behind three daughters and two grandchildren, and was a father in spirit to many others.

“We are trying to raise money for burial costs, and to fulfill his wishes of being buried next to his beloved Mother in his family mausoleum in Jacksonville, Florida. We have the next day or so to raise the money and to figure out what to do, we deeply need your help and would greatly appreciate any kindness or generosity you could show our family. Any donations you offer will be handled by his daughter and used for this purpose.”

Constance also shares a touching quote from her late father.

“Inspiring young minds to create, is the best legacy you can leave” – Cleve Hall.
