Sam Raimi-Produced Horror Movie ‘The Unholy’ Opens in the Number Two Spot at the Box Office

Adam Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong isn’t the only new movie playing in theaters, as the Sam Raimi-produced fright flick The Unholy (our review) also opened domestically this weekend. Starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who also headlined last night’s episode of “The Walking Dead,” The Unholy managed to come in at the #2 spot on the charts, behind Godzilla vs. Kong.

In 1,850 theaters in the United States, the film scared up $3,200,000 over the weekend.

Unlike Godzilla vs. Kong, The Unholy was anything but an “event movie,” a film that was under-promoted to the point that many fans probably weren’t even aware it had been released. And the reviews didn’t help matters either, with most critics agreeing that The Unholy doesn’t make much of a case for heading out to your local theater to experience it on the big screen.

At this time, The Unholy doesn’t yet have an at-home release date scheduled. Stay tuned.

Evan Spiliotopoulos wrote/directed The Unholy for Screen Gems, which has a cast including “The Walking Dead’s” Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Katie Aselton, William Sadler (Demon Knight, Bogus Journey), Cricket Brown, Diogo Morgado and SAW‘s Cary Elwes.

The Unholy follows Alice, a young hearing-impaired girl who, after a supposed visitation from the Virgin Mary, is inexplicably able to hear, speak and heal the sick. As word spreads and people from near and far flock to witness her miracles, a disgraced journalist (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) hoping to revive his career visits the small New England town to investigate. When terrifying events begin to happen all around, he starts to question if these phenomena are the works of the Virgin Mary or something much more sinister.”

The film is based on James Herbert’s novel Shrine, published in 1983.
