Fans of old-school point and click horror games like Sanitarium have something to look forward to with developer Wormwood Studios upcoming title, Strangeland (no relation to Dee Snider). In fact, you won’t have to wait very long for the title, as it’ll be releasing on Steam on May 25th.
Based on their success with their previous title, Primordia, Strangeland is described as “[integrating] a compelling narrative with engaging puzzles.” The story has you waking up in a nightmarish carnival, only to see a woman hurl herself down a bottomless well for your sake. It only gets stranger from there, as you find clues and help from jeering ravens, an eyeless scribe, a living furnace, a mismade mermaid and more of the inhabitants of the carnival.
In a news update on Strangeland‘s Steam page, one of the developers sums up their decisions to go the horror route, in case you were having any doubts about this game. “Strangeland’s themes can be developed best through the medium of horror. Other genres are certainly well suited to depicting loss (losing another; losing oneself) and rediscovery. But they come at the problem more obliquely. For my dollar, fantastical horror has the benefit of letting you come at those feelings head-on, to give them their full enormity.”
