Alexandre Aja Suggests His Adaptation of Junji Ito’s ‘Tomie’ is Not Dead Yet [Exclusive]

As you may recall, it was announced a couple years back that Alexandre Aja (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes, Crawl, Oxygen) was directing a live action adaptation of Junji Ito‘s manga Tomie, with the project set up at Quibi at the time. Of course, Quibi has since shut down and vanished off the face of the earth, which leads us to wonder if Aja’s Tomie is still happening.

How do we find out? Well, Bloody Disgusting’s Boo Crew Podcast sat down with Aja for an interview that just dropped this week, and he gave us a little update on the Tomie project.

“Quibi was supposed to be… I don’t know if you’re familiar with the manga but… you cannot kill Tomie. So… she will be back,” Aja teased with a smile during his chat with the Boo Crew.

Last we heard, Adeline Rudolph (“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”) had been set to lead the cast, with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (The Conjuring 2, Aquaman) writing the script. In the wake of Quibi shutting down, Roku ended up acquiring the bite-sized streaming service’s library, so perhaps Tomie will be finding new life down the road through Roku.

Based on the cult hit manga, Tomie is the story of what happens when a beautiful high school girl goes missing and pieces of her body are discovered scattered around a small town. But what starts out as a murder mystery turns into something even more horrific.

First published in 1987, Junji Ito’s Tomie has been adapted in Japan in the form of both a live-action film series and an anthology TV series that was also edited into a film.

You can listen to The Boo Crew’s full chat with Alexandre Aja below.
