The Scream franchise will return to theaters on January 14, 2022, and at this time we don’t know all that much about the movie or what paths it’ll be taking the series down. We do know, however, that the main cast is back, suggesting this is… Scream 5?
Well, not exactly. Not according to Courteney Cox, at least.
Cox, who will once again be reprising the iconic role of Gale Weathers in next year’s new Scream movie, provided an interesting tease on “The Drew Barrymore Show” this morning.
“This is the fifth one… it’s not Scream 5, though,” Cox explained to Barrymore. “This is Scream. The directors are incredible, they’re making it absolutely… it’s a new franchise.”
Cox continued, “It’s hip. It’s scary. It’s just a new Scream. It’s not a reboot, it’s not a remake, it’s just a brand new launch. I think it’s gonna be fantastic.”
And suddenly, we have no idea what to expect from this one. Which is the most exciting thing that can ever be said about a franchise relaunch. Stay tuned for more as we learn it!

Scream is being directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett of the filmmaking group Radio Silence (Ready or Not, V/H/S) from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt (Murder Mystery, Zodiac, The Amazing Spider-Man) and Guy Busick (Ready or Not, Castle Rock).
Kevin Williamson is back as executive producer.
