John Steinbeck Wrote a Werewolf Murder-Mystery in 1930 That Still Hasn’t Been Published to This Day

The late John Steinbeck is known for classic novels including Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath, and East of Eden, but he of course wrote many other novels throughout his legendary career. A few of them, it turns out, were never published. Of particular note for horror fans, Steinbeck wrote a murder-mystery werewolf novel that has still never seen the light of day.

The Guardian reports that Steinbeck’s archives include the unpublished novel Murder at Full Moon, “a full-length mystery werewolf story” that Steinbeck wrote way back in 1930!

The website notes that the novel “has survived unseen in an archive ever since being rejected for publication in 1930,” and the hope is that Steinbeck’s estate will release the tale.

The Guardian describes the “233-page typescript”…

“Set in a fictional Californian coastal town, Murder at Full Moon tells the story of a community gripped by fear after a series of gruesome murders takes place under a full moon. Investigators fear that a supernatural monster has emerged from the nearby marshes. Its characters include a cub reporter, a mysterious man who runs a local gun club and an eccentric amateur sleuth who sets out to solve the crime using techniques based on his obsession with pulp detective fiction.”

It would seem, alas, that Steinbeck’s estate has no plans on posthumously releasing the lost horror novel, so don’t expect to be reading Steinbeck’s take on werewolves anytime soon.

You can, at least, head over to The Guardian to learn more about Murder at Full Moon.
