HBO is currently developing a small screen adaptation of video game The Last of Us, with Pedro Pascal (“The Mandalorian”) playing Joel and Bella Ramsey (“Game of Thrones”) playing Ellie. The series from Craig Mazin (“Chernobyl”) will adapt the first game, and it will mark the very first time the video game franchise has found its way into the world of live action.
But a Last of Us movie almost did happen back in 2014, you may recall. Sam Raimi had been on board to produce a film adaptation of the original game for Sony Screen Gems, which the game’s writer/director/creator Neil Druckmann was set to write. The project ended up falling apart by 2016, and Druckmann explains what happened in a new chat with Script Apart.
“When I worked on the movie version, a lot of the thinking and notes were like ‘How do we make it bigger? How do we make the set pieces bigger?’ And it didn’t work for The Last of Us. I think that’s ultimately why the movie wasn’t made,” Druckmann explains to the podcast.
He continues, “Our approach for The Last of Us was ‘let’s make it as an indie film. Let’s approach it’s like an indie film team, the way it’s shot, the way how small and intimate it feels.’ And with the show we get to lean into that even more because we don’t have to have as many action sequences as we do in the game.”
Directors on board for the HBO series include Kantemir Balagov (Beanpole), who will be directing the pilot episode, as well as Jasmila Žbanić (Quo vadis, Aida) and Ali Abbasi (Border).
