Instead of remaking Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory for a second time, Warner Bros. is opting to tell the elusive candy inventory/maker’s origin story and have set Timothée Chalamet (Dune) as the title character, says Deadline.
Wonka will be based on characters created by Roald Dahl, focusing on a young Willy Wonka and his adventures prior to opening the world’s most famous chocolate factory.
If you’re skeptical, here’s something that should instill some confidence. Paddington‘s Paul King will direct from the screenplay he wrote with Simon Farnaby (with prior writers including Simon Rich, Simon Stephenson, Jeff Nathanson and Steven Levenson).
“This marks the third time WB has taken on the Wonka story, with the previous versions being adaptations of Dahl’s classic novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” recalls the site. “The first one, in 1971, starred Gene Wilder as Wonka, and the second in 2005 starred Johnny Depp in the role.”
While Wonka originally had dark-ish material, it’s unclear what direction this origin story will take. We’ll watch from a distance and report back if this becomes more horror-adjacent.
