Kevin Smith’s “Masters of the Universe: Revelation” Will Pay Homage to… ‘Hellraiser’?!

The battle for Eternia continues on Netflix this July 23 with the premiere of Kevin Smith and Mattel Television’s “Masters of the Universe: Revelation,” a brand new animated series that will serve as a direct continuation to the animated series from the 1980s.

“Part 1” of the series will feature five episodes that are all premiering on July 23, and Smith revealed on Twitter over the weekend that each one pays tribute to a 1980s classic.

Smith tweets, “In honor of the era in which @MastersOfficial began, each of the 5 eps in Part 1 of our series homages a different 80’s flick!” Here’s the breakdown he provided…

  • Ep 1 – Superman II (80)
  • Ep 2 – Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (84)
  • Ep 3 – Batman (89)
  • Ep 4 – Hellraiser (87)
  • Ep 5 – Masters of the Universe (87)

Yes, “Masters of the Universe: Revelation” will be paying homage to Clive Barker’s Hellraiser this summer, at least in some capacity. It’s hard to tell if Smith is talking about minor homages within the episodes or if he means each entire episode is inspired by one of these movies, but either way it’ll be interesting to see if we can spot the Hellraiser influence in Episode 4!

The war for Eternia culminates in “Masters of the Universe: Revelation,” an innovative and action-packed animated series that picks up where the iconic characters left off decades ago. After a cataclysmic battle between He-Man and Skeletor, Eternia is fractured and the Guardians of Grayskull are scattered. And after decades of secrets tore them apart, it’s up to Teela to reunite the broken band of heroes, and solve the mystery of the missing Sword of Power in a race against time to restore Eternia and prevent the end of the universe.

Kevin Smith is the showrunner/executive producer for “Masters of the Universe: Revelation,” with writers including Marc Bernardin (Castle Rock, Alphas), Eric Carrasco (Supergirl), Diya Mishra (Magic the Gathering), and Tim Sheridan (Reign of the Supermen). The 30-minute episodes were animated by Powerhouse Animation, with Bear McCreary composing.
