Two months ago, we mentioned that Netflix was looking to dip their toes into video games. Now, according to Bloomberg, the streaming giant is one step closer with the hiring of Oculus content VP Mike Verdu as vice president of game development.
According to someone familiar with the situation, Netflix plans on offering video games on their streaming platform within the next year. The games will be featured as a new programming genre, akin to how Netflix has categorized documentaries or stand-up specials. According to this same individual, Netflix currently isn’t planning to charge extra for the content.
As to just what video games Netflix will be offering isn’t clear. The potential for them to expand upon what the company dabbled in with shows like Black Mirror: Bandersnatch is a very real possibility, as would using existing properties such as Stranger Things or Fear Street. Netflix hasn’t commented publicly on the hiring of Verdu, but that will change once the service ramps up its plans.
