The fifth and final Purge was primed for a huge opening, but was tripped up by an extremely crowded box office.
The Forever Purge (read our review) opened with an estimated $12.75M throughout the weekend and a $15.86M total including Monday. The previous entry in the franchise, The First Purge, opened with $17.3M.
Diminishing returns appear to be a real thing here, albeit Universal Pictures sorta castrated their own film’s release, opening The Forever Purge against its own The Boss Baby: Family Business and forcing both movies to race against the super-charged F9: The Fast Saga in its second weekend of release.
Had this opened with less competition, there’s no world it couldn’t have raked in anywhere from $20M-$30M in its holiday weekend opening. Will Universal factor that into its decision as to whether or not to continue forth with the franchise? Time will tell, but there is still so much of the Purge Universe left to explore.
In other horror news, Paramount Pictures is extremely happy with A Quiet Place Part II as it approaches $150M domestic with the sequel now topping $250M globally. Not too shabby considering the film was delayed an entire year. Meagan Navarro was a fan, writing in her review that the John Krasinski-directed sequel “makes for an unexpected and satisfying continuation” to the franchise.
And here’s a little something I’m sure none of you were expecting: New Line Cinema’s The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (read Meagan’s review) is quietly approaching $200M worldwide after pulling in over $110M internationally. The sequel managed $300M globally, but there’s no world the studio isn’t still ecstatic with these numbers, especially considering it opened day-and-date here in the States on HBO Max. How much life does the Conjuring Universe still have?
