James Wan Says ‘Aquaman 2’ is “Heavily Inspired” by the Horror Movie ‘Planet of the Vampires’

The planned spinoff horror movie The Trench may no longer be happening, but that doesn’t mean James Wan is leaving horror behind when it comes to the Aquaman movie franchise.

Wan is returning to direct Aquaman 2 for Warner Bros. and DC, and he reveals in a new chat with Total Film that the upcoming sequel draws heavily from one particular horror movie.

Aquaman 2 is very heavily inspired by Planet of the Vampires,” Wan explains to Total Film (via Games Radar).

He adds, “You can take the boy out of horror but you can never take the horror out the boy.”

“Well, the first movie took a lot of people by surprise, right? And that’s partially because they were not familiar with the comic book, which deals in this very lurid, strange world,” Wan also notes. “People were taken aback that I didn’t throw all that stuff away and make a dark, heavy film. But I didn’t feel that would have been right for it. So with the second film, I feel it will be easier for people to accept where we go because I’ve already laid the foundation.”

Released in 1965, Planet of the Vampires was directed by the legendary Mario Bava, and Wan is in good company taking inspiration from the film. After all, Planet of the Vampires is often cited as a heavy influence on Ridley Scott’s sci-fi/horror classic, Alien.

In the film, “After landing on a mysterious planet, a team of astronauts begin to turn on each other, swayed by the uncertain influence of the planet and its strange inhabitants.”

It’s interesting to note that Wan also recently cited Mario Bava as an influence on his new movie Malignant, a Giallo-style horror film releasing in theaters & HBO Max on September 10.
