It was announced in March 2020 that Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body, The Invitation, Destroyer) would be directing a new take on Dracula for Blumhouse Productions, with Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay (The Invitation) writing the script. Alas, THR reports this week that Kusama’s Dracula project has been killed weeks before production.
THR’s report indicates, “Miramax is said to have exited, torpedoing what would have been a modern take on the mythos.” Production on the film was to begin next month.
The Hollywood Reporter also reveals that the film was going to be titled Mina Harker, which is new information we hadn’t previously been privy to. Additionally, Jasmine Cephas Jones was to star as the Mina Harker character, “who meets Dracula in modern day Los Angeles.”
Deadline’s report, meanwhile, notes that “sources say Miramax exited over creative differences with the filmmaker. The crew was informed hours ago.”
Deadline also adds some more plot information: “The movie was to be set in contemporary Los Angeles, centering on protagonist Mina Harker, who plays opposite Dracula in the movie, with the classic Bram Stoker protagonist going by the name of Vladimir in the film.”
Kusama had told The Kingcast back in 2020, “It’s a fairly faithful adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel. I think something that gets overlooked in the adaptations of Dracula in the past is the idea of multiple voices. In fact, the book is filled with different points of view. And the one point of view we don’t get access to, and all most adaptations give access to, is Dracula himself. So I would just say in some respect, this is going to be an adaptation called Dracula, but it’s perhaps not the same kind of romantic hero that we’ve seen in the past.”
It sounds like Karyn Kusama’s Dracula project might have changed quite a bit in these past two years, morphing into a project more centered on the Mina Harker character.
While it’s a bummer to hear this one isn’t moving forward, a Dracula film from Chloé Zhao is in the works last we heard, with spinoff movie Renfield also releasing next year.
